The Friday Staff Report to City Council provides weekly updates between staff and Council. This week’s report highlights new Fair Chance Hiring resources for local businesses, a road safety audit along Hickory Street conducted with NCTCOG, and recognition of Denton’s Municipal Court and Fleet/Facilities teams as benchmarks for other cities. Solid waste updates remind residents of regulations on overfilled bins and extra bag charges. Council requests addressed topics such as speeding concerns, easement issues, damaged curbs, stop signs, trash pickup, and construction impacts, with many already resolved and others pending follow-up later this month. No upcoming street closures are listed in this week’s report.

General Information

Fair Chance Hiring Resources – The City has published new resources on its Business Resources webpage to help businesses adopt fair chance hiring practices. These include programs from the Texas Workforce Commission and the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act that support inclusive hiring opportunities for individuals with criminal records.

Road Safety Audit with NCTCOG – City staff, NCTCOG, and Kimley Horn consultants conducted a safety audit on Hickory Street from Avenue C to Belle Avenue. The audit identified safety concerns and will inform future funding, design, and implementation steps. Additional audits will examine Carroll Boulevard and Welch Street.

Denton Leading the Way – Denton’s Municipal Court and Fleet/Facilities teams have attracted attention from other cities for their innovative processes. The court is being recognized for teen court and youth diversion programs, while Fleet/Facilities has been noted for efficient procurement practices and its asset management system, which is now a model for other municipalities.

Solid Waste and Recycling Overfull Bins – Residents must ensure trash, yard waste, and recycling containers are fully closed and not overflowing. Extra 13-gallon bags outside carts are collected for $5 each, automatically billed, while up to two bulky items per week can be scheduled for free.
