The Friday Staff Report to City Council provides weekly updates between staff and Council. Highlights this week include a proposed 2027 IRONMAN 70.3 bike route touching Denton on FM 2153 and FM 428, a planned Oct. 9-11 outage of the City’s eTRAKiT permitting system for cloud upgrades, Stream Clean volunteers removing more than 1.6 tons of waste from local waterways, an October launch and 2027 review timeline for Community Development, HOME, and Human Services grant funding with future Council input on the 2028 Consolidated Plan, and an Oct. 22 community meeting on the Newton Rayzor Safe Routes to School project, which now shows completion in 2028 at https://www.improvingdenton.com.

General Information

IRONMAN route review – The Town of Little Elm has proposed a bike route for the 2027 IRONMAN 70.3 Dallas-Little Elm on March 14, 2027, that would include a small portion of Denton city limits along FM 2153 and FM 428. City staff will continue coordinating with Little Elm and will share more details as plans are confirmed closer to the event. Organizers would notify affected residents.

Permitting website outage – The City’s eTRAKiT permitting software was scheduled to be offline from Friday, Oct. 9, through Sunday, Oct. 11 for system upgrades tied to a move to Amazon Web Services. The City said the change is intended to improve security, increase uptime, and keep the software current.

Stream Clean results – A total of 242 volunteers took part in Stream Clean on Oct. 3, collecting more than 1.6 tons of waste from local creeks and waterways. The cleanup removed 320 bags of trash, 30 tires, and other large debris items.

Council Member Requests

Grant program timeline – In response to a Council question, staff said applications for Community Development Block Grant, HOME, and Human Services funding are released in October 2026 and close in November, with Community Services Advisory Committee review in February 2027 and Council consideration in June and July 2027 before HUD submission in August. Staff also said Council will have engagement next year as the City develops its 2028-2032 Consolidated Plan and considers possible changes to how awards are scored and selected.

Safe Routes meeting – A community input meeting for the Newton Rayzor Elementary Safe Routes to School project is set for Oct. 22 at 6 p.m. at the Development Services Center, 401 N. Elm St. Staff said the meeting will cover the updated timeline and revised project scope, and the project page shows planned completion in 2028 at https://www.improvingdenton.com.
