The University of North Texas (UNT) in Denton offers high school students an opportunity to immerse themselves in advanced academics through the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science (TAMS). TAMS, a pioneering residential program, enables students from ninth to eleventh grade to excel in college courses while residing on UNT’s campus.
One notable participant, Shriya Raja, transitioned from Coppell High School to TAMS in her junior year. Originally aspiring to a medical career, her experience in Professor Warren Burggren’s science lab shifted her interest toward research, specifically studying the effects of hydrocarbons on zebrafish brains. “It was definitely a shift from high school,” she remarked, noting the independence it requires.
Meanwhile, Anirudh Mazumder, from Grapevine High School, is pursuing a computer science track. Mazumder engaged in research before classes began through TAMS’ summer program and worked in Professor Rajeev Azad’s lab to develop algorithms identifying COVID-19 biomarkers. Anirudh, embracing both computer science and biomedical research, said, “This research allows me to use data science to help people with diseases.”
The program also extends beyond math and science; students like Aria Cai can follow tracks in music. Cai, a talented pianist and singer, joined from The Einstein School and is enrolled in UNT’s renowned College of Music. Along with performing in ensembles and dance groups, she highlights the university’s resources and the chance to grow as a musician.
TAMS not only fosters academic growth but encourages personal and communal development through events like talent shows supporting HIV/AIDS causes and cultural festivals benefiting refugee shelters. As they prepare for future education, Aria, Anirudh, and Shriya reflect on TAMS with appreciation for its role in shaping their readiness for college.
The program’s unique integration of high school and college experiences underlines Denton’s commitment to fostering educational innovation and opportunity, impacting students’ lives and career aspirations in Texas and beyond.
