The University of North Texas (UNT) in Denton has received continued financial support from Capital One for its First-Generation Success Center, marking the fourth consecutive year of partnership. The latest grant aims to enhance the center’s programming and resources dedicated to first-generation students. Desiree Padron, the director of the Center for Belonging & Engagement, emphasized the impact of the grant on key initiatives such as the First-Gen Experience and Career Week programs. These initiatives aim to support first-generation students, who have shown a 91% retention rate and improved GPAs when engaging with the center. The First-Gen Experience, a one-day orientation for freshmen and transfer students, involves families in activities to build a support network and inclusivity. Edward Ruiz, a freshman electrical engineering major, highlighted the benefits of the program, which helped him feel more connected and supported. The First-Gen Career Week focuses on career readiness and leadership, preparing students for workforce challenges through training sessions and professional development. Monica Shortino, senior director at Capital One, expressed the company’s commitment to helping UNT’s first-gen students overcome additional college hurdles. Established in 2021, the First-Generation Success Center has become a crucial resource for over 4,000 students, offering a range of support, including financial aid, career preparation, and academic coaching. It conducted 689 individual student meetings and 45 programs last year, serving 2,579 students. The center is part of UNT’s Center for Belonging & Engagement within the Division of Student Affairs.
