The Texas Woman’s University (TWU) Music Department is set to present its first musical theatre show, ‘Out of the Blue,’ at the Margo Jones Performance Hall on November 2-3. This new production has emerged through a series of challenges, as the script, music, and lyrics were subject to changes after rehearsals commenced.
Due to a tightly packed schedule of musical performances, the cast has been unable to use the actual stage for rehearsals, instead practicing in a smaller room and only gaining stage access in the week leading up to the show. Further complexity arises as the production features two distinct casts for the performances, with only five of the 11 speaking roles consistently portrayed across both nights.
‘Out of the Blue’ is crafted by an Emmy-award-winning team, including writer Mark Mazzarella and composer Sean P. Pallatroni. The storyline follows 17-year-old Sienna, an art student losing her eyesight during her senior year, grappling with the challenge of achieving her dream of attending college and becoming an artist.
The space constraints and evolving nature of the production have necessitated a flexible approach to rehearsals, with faculty members Melissa Hall, Tracy Jordan, and Jeffrey Tarr leading the process. Despite the changes, faculty and students have adapted to ensure a full production experience.
Alyssa Serrano, a freshman leading the Saturday shows, captures the commitment required: ‘Our job is to act the hell out of whatever we’re given.’ The dual casting allows for a unique portrayal of Sienna’s character, with Serrano and senior Angeleen DeWitte each offering their interpretations.
Tickets for ‘Out of the Blue’ are priced at $10 for adults, $5 for students and senior citizens, and are free for children under 12. They are available for purchase online. The performances on Saturday, November 2, will commence at 7:30 p.m., followed by a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m.
