The eSports varsity team “Obsidian” from Guyer High School, of Denton ISD, demonstrated their exceptional skills and determination by securing remarkable victories in multiple prestigious Rocket League tournaments during the 2021/2022 school year.

Leading the charge, Obsidian claimed the coveted 1st place in the 2021/2022 Rocket League PlayVS Texas state championship. Despite facing formidable competition, the team showcased their exceptional talent and teamwork, solidifying their place at the top of the tournament.

Building upon their success, Obsidian continued their winning streak this year, emerging as champions once again in the Rocket League PlayVS Texas state championship for 2023. With an unyielding spirit, the team is currently competing in the PlayVS Cup ’23 (nationals), representing Guyer High School with honor and determination.

In addition to their PlayVS victories, Obsidian’s triumphs extended to the High School Esports League (HSEL) 2023 Texas state championship for Rocket League. Following their stellar performance, Obsidian received the honor of being hosted by the University of North Texas (UNT) eSports team, where they claimed 1st place in the 2023 HSEL regionals. The team is now geared up to represent their school, district, and hometown of Denton, TX, from May 19 to May 21 at the HSEL nationals, hosted by Generation Esports in Kansas City, MO.

Throughout the 2022/2023 school year, Team Obsidian accomplished numerous noteworthy achievements, including being grand finalists in the Texas Scholastic Esports (TexSEF) Texas state championship, TexSEF Invitational, and Grapevine-Colleyville ISD Rocket League Invitational.

The success of Obsidian can be attributed to the remarkable talents and dedication of the players, including returning members Justin Peacok (senior) and Jackson Block (sophomore), along with the valuable contributions of new teammates Nolan VanWyngarden (sophomore) and Jaden Mayville (junior). Their exceptional gameplay is complemented by the guidance and coaching provided by esteemed Guyer High School faculty members: coach Lori Berney, coach Keith Crappell, and coach Hunter Arcuri.

As the Guyer High School eSports program continues to flourish, the achievements of Obsidian highlight their commitment to excellence, teamwork, and the pursuit of victory.
