It’s never too early to start reading to your child. The Denton Public Library is thrilled to offer 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten, an early literacy program that encourages families with children 5 years old (pre-Kindergarten) or younger to read to their children every day.

Reading to preschool-age children builds vocabulary, language skills, and helps prepare them with the skills they need for Kindergarten. In as little as 15 minutes a day, families can build the skills for future school and life success. If parents and children read just one book a night, they will have read 365 books in a single year. That is 730 books in two years and 1,095 books in three years!

As families work towards the goal of reading 1,000 books, they will receive prizes along the way. Prizes are generously provided by a grant from the Denton Benefit League.

This program will launch on Monday, April 26, 2021. Enrollment packets in English and Spanish are available at all Denton Public Library locations, or library users can sign up and track their reading online at denton.readsquared.com. For more information on the program, including suggested readings lists, call (940) 349-8752 or check out the Library’s 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten website at .

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is a self-paced program that can take anywhere from a few months to a few years to complete. It depends on how often you read together. Through this program, we hope to encourage families to read together, and have fun reading!!

Steps in the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program:

  1. Enroll your child(ren) in the program at denton.readsquared.com.

  4. Read 750 books and earn a fun, child-friendly color-changing cup.

  5. Read 1,000 books and receive a certificate of completion, a free book, a hand puppet, and an invitation to the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Graduation Ceremony, held annually.
