It’s Time for Tree Trimming

Tree limbs become an issue when they aren’t trimmed regularly. Ensuring your tree limbs are trimmed not only allows for the safe passage of vehicles and pedestrians on our streets and sidewalks, but it also protects the trees from damage. Damaged trees can threaten the wellbeing of people and property as they are more likely to drop limbs. Trees that are damaged are also more likely to catch diseases and become infested with insects.

Remember that Denton has a set of tree regulations intended to keep our citizens and their trees safe and healthy:

• Tree Limbs Over a Street: Tree limbs that are over the street must be trimmed to a height of at least 13.5 ft.

• Tree Limbs Over a Sidewalk: Tree limbs that are over a sidewalk must be trimmed to a height of at least 7 ft.

• Tree Limbs Over an Alley: Tree limbs that are over an alley must be trimmed to a height of at least 12 ft.

Also, while some tree limbs meet their height requirements, they might create other safety issues. Trees and shrubs near roadways can create view obstructions for drivers and pedestrians. They may also block street signs. Grass and dirt encroaching onto a sidewalk can create a tripping hazard, especially for our vision-impaired residents.

Yard Waste Opt-In Service

Yard waste is now a subscription-based service that customers must opt-in to receive service. Yard waste includes grass clippings, leaves, weeds, fruit and vegetables scraps, and small twigs. Once customers have opted-in, yard waste will be collected curbside weekly. Two subscription options are available and described below.

Option 1: Cart

• Purchase a $20 Cart (one-time fee).

• $0.50 monthly service fee.

• Yard waste cart will be emptied weekly, along with an unlimited number of kraft bags filled with yard waste.

• Up to four cubic yards of brush will also be collected. (For size reference, four cubic yards of brush is roughly the size of four washing machines.)

Option 2: Kraft Bags

• Purchase Kraft Bags from a local retailer.

• $1.00 monthly service fee.

• An unlimited number of kraft bags filled with yard waste will be collected.

• Up to four cubic yards of brush will also be collected. (For size reference, four cubic yards of brush is roughly the size of four washing machines.)
