The City of Denton Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to promoting physical activity and fostering a sense of community through its Athletics division. Offering a wide range of recreational sports programs and events, the Athletics division caters to individuals of all ages and skill levels, ensuring a fun and inclusive environment for all.
With sports programs such as basketball, volleyball, soccer, flag football, running, cornhole, and more, the Athletics division aims to encourage people to participate in athletic activities while enjoying friendly competition. Operating from two centers located at North Lakes Park, the Goldfield Tennis Center, and North Lakes Driving Range, the Athletics division partners with tennis and golf professionals to provide lessons, classes, and tournaments.
Excitingly, a new tennis center called the Denton Tennis Center is currently under construction and is set to open in June 2023. This state-of-the-art facility will feature a pro shop, 12 tennis courts, and 8 pickleball courts, further expanding the recreational opportunities for Denton residents.
The Athletics division also collaborates with local youth sports associations, including the Denton Soccer Association, Denton Boys Baseball Inc., and Denton County Youth Football League, to provide additional organized sports leagues. While these associations operate separately from the Parks and Recreation Department, they share the common goal of offering valuable opportunities to Denton’s youth. Participation in youth sports has been linked to improved academic performance and overall well-being, making these programs essential for the community.
In addition to the numerous programs and events offered, the Athletics division contributes to Denton’s economy by renting out sports complexes for athletic tournaments. These large-scale events attract visitors to Denton, who in turn spend money at local businesses, such as restaurants, shopping centers, and hotels. This increased consumer spending can lead to economic growth, higher income levels, and improved standards of living for both individuals and communities.
The City of Denton Parks and Recreation Department’s Athletics division plays a crucial role in promoting physical activity, fostering a sense of community, and boosting the local economy. With a new tennis center opening soon and ongoing partnerships with local youth sports associations, the future is bright for Denton’s athletic community.
