General Information
Pending Council Requests Work Session Topics – The Jan. 23 Council Work Session will cover two main items. First, there will be a discussion on Narcan distribution and education for emergency treatment of opioid overdoses. Secondly, the session will consider a resolution to support legislation prohibiting pet stores from selling dogs or cats unless sourced from an animal control agency, shelter, or rescue organization.
Public WiFi – The City of Denton experienced internet connectivity issues starting Jan. 11, impacting public WiFi in municipal buildings and downtown, as well as the Customer Service kiosk at City Hall East. These issues have since been resolved following network repairs.
Community Development Grant Funding Applications – The 2024-25 Community Development Grant Program application period, which opened on Dec. 15, 2023, and closed on Jan. 16, 2024, received 27 applications. These applications are split into Human Services ($1,457,000 from 21 applications), Housing Projects ($898,464 from 4 applications), and Public Facilities ($292,760 from 2 applications). The Community Services Advisory Committee will evaluate these applications and make funding recommendations to the City Council in April.
Valet Service Area Cart Washing Truck – The Solid Waste & Recycling Department has acquired a Cart Washing Truck for valet customers in Downtown and Fry Street commercial areas. This truck, set to launch in late January, can clean two carts simultaneously and uses eco-friendly products, aiming to enhance the efficiency of cleaning commercial trash and recycling containers.
Council Member Requests
Business Property Concerns – Council Members Meltzer and McGee brought forth a business owner’s concerns about compliance with fire code and ADA regulations on Jan. 7. Staff, along with the property manager and business owner, conducted inspections at the location to determine necessary compliance steps. Ongoing follow-ups with the business owner are planned to ensure all compliance requirements are met.
Open Fire Hydrant – Council Member Byrd inquired on Jan. 13 about an open fire hydrant at East Oak and Crawford, following reports of milky water from residents. The Water Department responded by flushing the lines through the fire hydrant to address this issue.
Request for Park Usage – Council Member Byrd relayed a resident’s request on Jan. 18 for field preparations at Fred Moore Park for an MLK Day football game scheduled for Jan. 19. Staff plans to prepare the field and will directly update the resident who made the request.
