The Friday Staff Report to City Council provides weekly updates between staff and Council. Key points include the continuation of detours due to waterline work at Bell Ave., with a partial reopening expected by April 26. The City introduced a Performance Scorecard for Animal Services, enhancing service delivery monitoring. This week also marks Animal Care and Control Appreciation Week, honoring the dedication of Animal Services staff. Additionally, the Office of Economic Development has expanded its outreach through social media, and road closures are planned for the upcoming Fry Street Fair. A restoration project for Avondale Park has been announced, with community discussions planned. Lastly, Council Member Meltzer facilitated outreach to a local non-profit for potential grant opportunities.

General Information

Bell Ave. Closure – The installation of a new waterline at the intersection of Prairie St. and Bell Ave. is extending into next week. Detours will continue along Elm St. and Locust St. A partial reopening of Bell Ave. is expected by Friday, Apr. 26, which will allow traffic flow while roadway restoration is completed.

Department Performance Scorecards – Strategic Services has introduced the Animal Services’ Performance Scorecard on the City’s Strategic Plan Dashboard. This tool supports departments in enhancing service delivery and ongoing improvement efforts, showcasing metrics like response to community calls, animal care provision, and animal placement activities by Denton Animal Services.

Animal Care & Control Appreciation Week – Mayor Hudspeth proclaimed the week of Apr. 14-20 as Animal Care and Control Appreciation Week. This event recognizes the efforts and dedication of the Animal Services staff towards community service and animal welfare.

Office of Economic Development on Social Media – The Office of Economic Development has launched its presence on social media platforms including Facebook and LinkedIn. These platforms will feature updates on business news and events in the downtown area.

Road Closures for Fry Street Fair – For the Fry Street Fair event, portions of Hickory St., Fry St., and Ave. A will be closed from 4:00 AM on Saturday, Apr. 27 to 6:00 AM on Monday, Apr. 30. A traffic control plan will be in effect to manage the closures.

Avondale Park Streambank Restoration – The City is set to begin the Avondale Park Streambank Restoration Project in May, aimed at addressing and preventing erosion damage along Cooper Creek. A stone bank protection wall will be constructed on the creek’s south side. A virtual community meeting is scheduled for Apr. 25 to discuss the project details.

Council Member Requests

Grant Information Request – Council Member Meltzer initiated a request on Apr. 17 for staff to contact a Denton County non-profit about potential grant funding opportunities. Following this request, the staff reached out to the non-profit to provide information on available funding and included them in relevant communication distributions.
